The Farmhouse Table

The DIY Farmhouse Table

How to Save a Bundle on Your Own!

I absolutely LOVE the farmhouse table look! The simplicity of this style table is what makes this particular design so incredibly desirable. Further, this is also the reason WHY these tables are so dang expensive at any furniture store. You can expect a table like this at Pottery Barn to be well over a thousand dollars. My husband and I walked into Kirkland's and saw their version of this table for over $900. I am such a tightwad I went looking online for some plans to create our table for WAY LESS.

The Plans

We found our table plans on the Ana White website! This website gives you everything you need to put this table together. The only difference between the original table plans and our table is that we needed to adjust the length of our table to fit our dining area. Our table is the same width but is 59" in length, rather than the 8' that hers is.

Putting the Plan Into Action!

So here we go! We took our plans and our cut list, headed to Home Depot, got the wood, gave them the cut list, and that was it! They cut all of the wood to our specifications and all we had to do was transport it home and put the table together!

Once the table was assembled, we filled the holes with putty and then used an orbital sander with an 80 grit sandpaper to really get rid of the roughness. I then followed by sanding with a 120 grit and then a 220 grit for an ultra-smooth surface. After that point, the table was stained with a rustic oak color and two coats of durable polyurethane.

As I am a TOTAL ROOKIE when it comes to wood projects such as this, I THOUGHT we had enough ventilation with all the windows open for the varnish. We certainly did not...do this in a well-ventilated garage.

The Decor

We found almost all of our tabletop decor at Target! I am a huge fan of the Magnolia Market brand and they have just come out with a ton of great things. The table runner and rug were found at Homegoods. Our rollback upholstered chairs were from Amazon

The Proof

Please take a look at these pictures and visit the Ana White website for your next home project! We couldn't be happier with how this table turned out and can't wait for the next project! And here is the part you all want to know...the total cost!

All the materials for the table came to a total of $126

Table Top Decor: $105

Upholstered Chairs: $276

Grand total: $507

Considering our beginning budget was $500, I would say we did pretty great and we have a solid wood table that will outlast our kids!
